In the fifth episode of our Artists on the Cape Series, we are joined by the wildly talented singer and songwriter Tianna Esperanza, who discusses her debut album Gypsy Afro, her experiences of growing up on Cape Cod and her search for community, how loss and grief have shaped her art and her life, and what all of these things have taught her about moving forward, who she is, and how she wants to be seen.

Tianna Esperanza
Tianna Esperanza is a singer/songwriter who embodies a depth of talent and heart well beyond her years. Her music has been described as having hints of Nina Simone, Public Enemy, and Gil Scott-Heron. Tianna is the granddaughter of punk legend, “Palmolive,” founder of the London-based 1970s all-girl punk band, The Slits, and is known for her personal and political lyrics, making for a powerful and unforgettable experience.
Her most recent work, “Afro Gypsy” was released July 24, 2020. Recorded at Brick Hill Studios in Orleans, Cape Cod, the eight-song “Afro Gypsy” is a powerful mix of modern folk and jazz-infused numbers with frequent funky flourishes. The music is punctuated by Esperanza’s disarming voice, which can be soothing one second and galvanizing the next. You can listen to the album here.
